Double aspect of good and evil in Rappaccini's daughter"Hawthorne shows in the story that the inner world of human experience is a complex and ambiguous mixture of good and evil (Stallman 2) ." Hawthorne describes that the existence of good and evil is part of life and that a person can decide which path to take. From the story, Hawthorne introduces the reader to the character of Doctor Rappaccini, a scientist who experiments with poisonous plants and later injects poison into his daughter Beatrice to transform her into superhuman qualities. The transformation of Beatrice and her lover Giovanni into a poisonous being raises the question of whether they are good or bad. In the novel "Rapaccini's Daughter", Nathaniel Hawthorne incorporates figurative language, descriptive details, and allusions to portray the dual aspects of good and evil in each character to convey to the audience that human beings embody both good and evil. the dual aspects of good and evil in humans are exemplified through the use of figurative language. In the story, Beatrice is described as a beautiful young woman. Hawthorne presents Beatrice's beauty to the audience through "a portal carved with the figure of a young girl, dressed with as much richness of taste as the splendor of the flowers, fair as the day (3)." These positive traits of Beatrice are presented to express her goodness towards the flowers and the day. Unlike Beatrice being beautiful, Beatrice is also poisonous. Author Roy R Male Jr. suggests that Beatrice is harmful, "The poison in her system, the sign of her corruption brings death to the garden" (101). Beatrice is compared to death because the creatures- lizard and b...... at the center of life, and this indicates her good nature. By incorporating figurative language, descriptive details, and allusions, Nathaniel Hawthorne demonstrates in “Rapaccini's Daughter” that human beings can embody the dual aspects of good and evil. Hawthorne proposes the universal truth that not only can humanity be seen one way, but it can also be seen another way. Hawthorne conveys this truth in each of the main characters, Doctor Rappaccini, Beatrice, and Giovanni. Occasionally, however, Dr. Rappaccini may be thought to have bad intentions. However, it can also be perceived oppositely as having positive intentions. For example, in the story Rappaccini only tries to protect his daughter but his ways can be compared to those of a madman. Rappaccini's purpose for his experiments can be perceived as evil or good. Therefore, humanity has the dual aspect of good and evil.
