Topic > The New Netherlands - 892

IntroductionThis is a project about the United States, we have to do it for the history topic. We have to answer one main question. As the main question I chose; What was the influence of the Dutch on the New Netherlands? I chose this question because I thought it would be an interesting thing about the history of New Netherland. I will use subquestions to answer the main question. The three sub-questions concern the drive of the Dutch to seek new colonies, what did the Dutch get from New Netherlands and what did they bring to New Netherlands, and what was the influence of the colony on the hinterland. For my research on the subquestions I had to use the Internet. These three questions will be answered in sub-question 1. What was the drive for the Dutch to seek new colonies? In the golden age of the VOC (United East India Company), the Dutch were well known for their trade. They had ships and trading posts all over Asia and Africa. However they were looking for shortcuts to sail much faster to their home ports. The shorter the sailing with their cargo, the more profit they could make. Finding new and faster ways to sail east would be great, so they began exploring the sea to find these shortcuts and create new routes to sail for trade. Henry Hudson (English sailors) began sailing his ship called "the half moon" in 1609 for the VOC. Officially he was looking for a new trade route to Asia. He was looking for the Northwest Passage through North America west of the Half Moon. Many explorers before him did not find the Northwest Passage. But he found something else, the New Netherlands of paper...the meanest people become mean and start defending what they think is legally theirs. These little fights often ended in big trouble and sometimes even wars with the natives or other countries like England we can say that the Dutch had "some" influence when New Amsterdam was founded. Later the Dutch came to the conclusion that the reason we founded the New Amsterdam outpost, to trade and earn money, was not what we expected. More and more people sailed to New Amsterdam and never returned. They settled and found their way in this great and endless country. The Dutch later lost New Amsterdam to the English and gave it the new name “New York”. The connection with the Dutch and with America today is still very good. Nowadays there is still some sort of understanding between the two countries, it is a remnant of history?
