The Lost Letters of Pergamum, by Bruce W. Longnecker, is a story of letters exchanged between the characters Antipas and Luke. Antipas is a civic leader in Rome and Luke is the writer of the Gospel of Luke and the book of Acts. This book was written to give the modern reader a look at the context of 1st century Christianity and the church. Longnecker conveys the life of Christ through letters and the effects of his life on culture. Throughout the book we see clear differences between the Roman Empire and Christianity and at the end of the letters we witness Antipas go through a dramatic change in heart and character. CONFLICT Longenecker does an excellent job in this book of bringing out the differences between Romans and Christians. Christians and effectively showing the challenges that Christians have faced in this period. It also presents how the first-century Church breaks social trends through faith in Christ. This is demonstrated through the description of Christian worship. In the story, Antipas is amazed that Christians do not relate to each other based on their class or social rank. Longenecker also contrasts the differences between churches. Explain the two house churches, which are faithful to the ideals of Christ. The other attempts to include Christianity in Roman paganism. One of the main conflicts in this story is that Pergamum is a place where Satan is present, which means that it must have been really difficult for anyone to maintain faith in Christ. The Romans were also incredibly harsh and cruel in the way they dealt with the issue. Anyone who looked to a divine god instead of the one given to them by their government could be killed. This is what made the Gospel to the people of the first century extremely frightening and impossible......middle of paper......writes. He makes sure he knows he is a nobleman but as time goes by, you see the change in Antipas and that he becomes more humble and aware of others. He sincerely wants to know more about Luca and what his values are. The Lost Letters of Pergamum shows how, even in different time periods and cultures, all people have their own journey of discovering who Christ is to them. In this first century, the idea of God as one who loves and desires a personal relationship with humans is mind-blowing, especially in this Roman emperor culture where it is taught that the political leader is God. Antipas is shocked by the fact that God wants to be involved in his life. This story was great and I really liked the letter format. It was so interesting to see the extreme conflict between Romans and Christians and how God was faithful and ultimately saved Antipas despite it.
