Cold-Blooded KillersSharks: Carnivorous, flesh-eating, carnivorous creatures that roam the ocean. What could stand in the way of such beasts? Certainly puny humans could not interfere with these brutes. Or could we? It is estimated that over one hundred million sharks are killed every year (Why sharks are in danger of extinction). All one hundred million deaths are due to humanity. There are many ways in which we, as humans, slaughter sharks. One of these, and by far the worst, is shark finning. Huge fishing companies catch sharks and cut off their fins. The shark, still alive, is then thrown into the sea to die a slow and painful death by starving, being eaten alive by other fish or even drowning (Finding... End It). Over 95% of many other shark species have been decimated since 1970. Despite the fact that shark finning is illegal in many parts of the world; many other countries still allow shark finning. Shark fins are in high demand in Asian countries and are used in soups and medical remedies (Why sharks are in danger of extinction). Hong Kong handles 50-80% of the world's shark fin trade. The United States is one of the largest suppliers of shark fins (Andrews Why We Need Sharks). Female sharks only give birth to a few sharks in their lifetime. Now, when calves are born, it takes years for them to grow and mature enough to have children of their own. Due to the long period between birth and maturation, the shark population does not increase as quickly as sharks are finned and slaughtered. With the rapid decline of the shark population, these creatures will soon become extinct unless something is done soon. Another threat is capture. Capture refers to the accidental capture of a non-target object... middle of the paper... but what if you don't already eat anything that contains shark? Look at the products or clothes you use. Many different types of cosmetics and leather are made from certain parts of the shark (Anderson Uses for Sharks). Some pet chew toys are also made of shark skin. Another helpful tip is to speak up! Help us raise the voice to save sharks and our world. There are many different sites to check out if interested. One of them is Shark Angels. Shark Angels is an organization dedicated to saving sharks and the oceans. Their goal is to spread the word globally that sharks are becoming an endangered species in a fun and positive way. Out of six billion people in the world, on average, only 75 shark attacks are reported every year. Meanwhile, humans are slaughtering millions of sharks and destroying not only their environment, but ours as well.
