Topic > The Difference Between Weather and Climate - 2768

Second (Gutro, 2005) "Weather is basically the way the atmosphere behaves, primarily with respect to its effect on human life and activities." Climate is different from weather and consists of short-term changes in the atmosphere, while climate is weather over a long period of time. Weather consists of sun, rain, cloud cover, winds, hail, snow, sleet, freezing rain, floods, blizzards, ice storms and thunderstorms, steady rain from a cold front, excessive heat, heat waves, and more (Gutro, 2005). According to (publisher, 2013) weather differs from climate in that the latter includes the summary of meteorological conditions that have prevailed over a certain area during a long period of time, generally 30 years. Weather occurs in the troposphere, which is the lowest region of the atmosphere; the troposphere extends from the Earth's surface 6-8 km (4-5) at the poles and up to about 17 km (11 miles) at the equator. Clouds and almost all precipitation develop in the troposphere. Conditions in the upper regions of the troposphere and above, such as the jet stream and upper air waves, significantly influence the pattern of atmospheric pressure at sea level – the so-called highs and lows – and therefore the meteorological conditions on the earth's surface. Elements such as mountains and large bodies of water also influence the weather. Ocean surface temperature anomalies have also been identified as a potential cause of atmospheric temperature anomalies in subsequent seasons and distant locations. An example of this meteorological interaction between the ocean and the atmosphere is what scientists call the Nino/Southern Oscillation (ENSO). There is also evidence that ENSO is responsible not only for unusual weather events in the Pacific region,...... middle of paper ......and the Bahamas, although some islands were affected more than others depending on the path the hurricane took.
