“What studies tell us is that the most important skill you can teach a child is reading...” this quote will be true forever (Cantarella). Reading opens up new possibilities, new mindsets and can change hearts. Although books can change the heart in a negative way, the positive heart change that can come from books overshadows the negative one. The places visited while reading are places that people can only imagine. Books can unintentionally capture the soul and captivate the mind. Books can change the way people think, which can lead to a change in the entire world. The fact of the matter is that books can change a person's life. One way books can change a person's life is by encouraging them to do good deeds. The book Pay it Forward exemplifies this perfectly. Catherine Ryan Hyde wrote the non-fiction book to let the world know the story of an eleven-year-old boy named Trevor who decided to choose the best place as a school assignment. Since the book came out, the amount of “pay it forward” stock has increased dramatically. For example, on Christmas Eve 2013, the world's longest "pay it forward" record was broken. A Starbucks in Connecticut pays the customer for the next customer's coffee. Thanks to just one person paying in advance, over 1,000 people had their coffee paid for and paid for someone else's coffee too. Manager Joshua says, “We hope it continues, even if it doesn't continue here, we just hope it inspires people to do greater things and inspires people to want to do more for their communities” (Chen).
