Tobacco originally grew in North America and South America. It was used as a pain reliever and all-round healer, from wound dressing to relieving tooth pain ("History..."). Smoking was used in Native American religious ceremonies. New World explorers brought tobacco back to Europe from North America, and by 1600 it became an acceptable daily pastime. Tobacco users placed dried tobacco leaves in cigars and pipes or breathed in powdered tobacco known as snuff. Although some people despised the use of tobacco, it continued to become substantially popular after cigarettes began to be mass-produced in the 1800s. Smoking has been identified as “a direct cause of cancer and various other health problems” by Surgeon General of the United States in 1964 (“Smoking”). Smoking kills more than alcohol, drugs, car accidents, AIDS, and suicide combined, and ninety percent of smokers start smoking by age eighteen (Schwartz). Although people who start smoking as teenagers are less likely to quit, it is possible to quit smoking with the right resources. “According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there are approximately 1.3 billion smokers worldwide. This number is expected to increase to 1.7 billion by 2020… According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), smoking causes approximately 443,000 deaths each year in the United States” (“Smoking” ). Tobacco contains over 4,000 chemicals, including some that are poisonous and others that cause cancer (“Smoking”). Smokers tend to die 13 or 14 years earlier than those who don't smoke ("11..."). Women who smoke during pregnancy expose their baby to the danger of miscarriage, premature birth, death in infancy and mental and physical development problems. Tobacco use... middle of paper... have used televisions, radios, posters and other means in hopes of reducing smoking not only among teenagers, but among smokers of all ages ("Young people.. ."). The CDC launched Tips, the first national paid tobacco education campaign in March 2012. Tips launched a campaign this year about the severity of the effects of smoking. Some of the impacts covered in the campaign were gum disease and problems during pregnancy, and it focuses on reaching lower socioeconomic groups with high numbers of smokers ("Campaign..."). Communities around the world have made efforts to educate people about smoking. There have been interventions among communities to reduce the promotion and availability of tobacco. Schools, colleges and community programs have all worked to create a smoke-free social convention. As part of these efforts, smoking has been banned in some workplaces and public areas (“Youth…”).
