According to the dictionary, equality is when the distribution of resources or goods between people is considered fair. Many people would agree with this definition, but many would say that equality does not exist. “The year was 2081 and everyone was finally equal” (Vonnegut 1). When Honroe de Balzac said: “Equality perhaps is a right, but no power on Earth will ever be able to transform it into a fact”, he demonstrates that true equality does not exist, it is a fantasy. In The Hunger Games, Harrison Bergeron and The Lottery you can see how equality is implemented in a very inhumane way. I believe true equality will exist when everyone is treated equally, regardless of race, religion or gender. In The Hunger Games, the reaping system is considered the same but is actually flawed. When the children of District 12 (or any of the other Districts) decide to be placed more than once in exchange for membership cards - a meager year's supply of grain and oil for one person - because their families are starving. This is not equal because when you get extra tiles you get enough for the whole family, meaning your name goes into the reaping by choosing the pile multiple times. Like Katniss, she receives enough cards for her mother and sister Primrose, her name being repeated many more times. Additionally, there are 12 districts and the Capitol. The higher the district number (i.e. District 1-3), the richer the district will be. The richest is the Capitol where they shine with money, jewels, food, etc. Also, when the author talks about how Katniss and her best friend Gale like to go into the woods beyond the gate surrounding District 12, she goes looking for her. bow. No one is allowed to have weapons of any kind, other than the Pea... in the center of the card... it is shown throughout the story. Listed above are all the reasons why I believe equality is not shown throughout the Lottery. I agree that true equality will exist when everyone is treated equally, regardless of race, religion or gender. Equality doesn't exist when people are punished for how pretty they are, how smart they are, what race or religion they are, etc. If people could learn to stop judging everything they believe is not normal and accept people for who they think they really are, then I believe this country would have a chance at achieving true equality. No matter how much effort is made to change the way they are treated, there will always be someone who is against the rules, which means that there will never be true equality, but it can get closer if the majority of citizens could learn to stop judging people.
