Alexander I of Russia ruled as Tsar from 1802 until his death in 1825. During this time he did a lot for Russia as a country and for the administration. With every ruler a major failure usually comes to mind; George W. Bush's post-9/11 politics, or Winston Churchill's Gallipoli campaign. For Alexander, his greatest failure is the Holy Alliance. The Holy Alliance was a partnership between Russia, Austria and Prussia created in 1815 by Alexander. His main goal was to instill the Christian values of charity and peace into European political life. These three leaders used it to unite against the revolutionary influence coming from their nations. With the establishment of the Holy Alliance, there are three effects that made it a failure; Alexander went from his original liberal ideas to very conservative reactionary ones, meaning that these reforms were not pushing the country forward, but the country was at a standstill. The next reason for the failure of the Holy Alliance was that Alexander was concerned with preserving peace and order in fear that there might be a revolution. Alexander spent much of his final years trying to keep this treaty united with many other nations while trying to prevent war from breaking out. The final reason this was such a huge failure is that it made Alexander obsessed with mysticism and the Christian religion. This is not necessarily a bad thing for a normal citizen, but when trying to make any progress in the nation, religion must stay out of it, due to the predominantly conservative reforms that come with it. It is for these reasons that Alexander's greatest failure as Tsar is the Holy Alliance and the implications it had on his behavior as a ruler.
