About 11,000 years ago, somewhere in the Atlantic Ocean, there was an island called Atlantis. In Atlantis resided a race of people with great technologies far more advanced than any other ("Lost Civilizations: The Story of Atlantis"). According to Greek mythology, Atlantis was the home of the Greek god Poseidon. Poseidon fell in love with a mortal woman and built her a house in the center of the island, surrounding her with water and earth to keep her protected ("Lost Civilization: The Story of Atlantis"). A temple in honor of Poseidon was built near the center of the island; the temple contained a large golden statue of Poseidon on a chariot with winged horses. Atlantis grew rich thanks to its abundant harvests and exotic herbs and spices. After some time the inhabitants of Atlantis began to become greedy and power-hungry, to punish the Atlanteans, Zeus and the other gods forced the sea to swallow the great city ("Lost Civilization: The Story of Atlantis"). Is the city of Atlantis just a part of Greek history or was it actually a large and prosperous city? The only known writing about the lost city comes from a Greek philosopher, named Plato. There is much controversy over how believable his story is. Plato was born around 428 BC in Athens (“Plato - Biography”). He was in the Athenian army until after the Peloponnesian War. After his military service he left and joined the oligarchy. He soon got tired of politics and became a writer and traveled the world studying (“Plato - Biography”). Plato became a very well-known writer. He then returned to Athens and founded a school called The Academy. He was the tutor of many great Greek rulers, including Aristotle and Dionysus II, the ruler of Syracuse. He said... in the middle of the paper... that one day he will be found. Through all the evidence supporting both sides of the thesis, the reader can decide whether Atlantis really existed. Works Cited “Atlantis: True Story or Cautionary Tale?” National geographic.
