For many students, it is imperative to be unbeatable. To make this happen for them, these students strive to get to the top. They live for major A's confused about their entire report card. A report card like this lets the student know that every hour spent studying diligently to pass the test or complete homework was worth it. But what happens when this concept is no longer in force? When the student no longer has the will to thrive in his studies because the top grades he fought for are taken away from him? It then becomes difficult to stay motivated, stay awake all those hours to complete your work, you lose sight of the final goal; graduate and become whatever they want to be. It quickly becomes difficult for universities to distinguish between kids who want to do well and strive for perfection, and those who do just enough to get ahead. There are many disadvantages that can arise from a positive and negative grading system, but perhaps the worst of all is the loss of a quality student. The quality student that all schools want to see first begins to deteriorate under this new system through loss of motivation. Imagine being that guy, the guy who has always been at the top because he works hard at what he does. You stay up until midnight trying to finish your persuasive essay but once you realize you've finished it you believe it was worth it because you did your best and came up with an essay that will definitely get an A. Next week you will be sitting in your classroom and your teacher gives you back your homework. Ecstatic you take yours back and there you see the stamp at the top of your paper letting you know you passed. However, it's not like the A's you're used to being in that place... middle of paper... check, some show they need a little extra help because they just aren't getting it. Of course there are many different meanings this moment can have, but there is no way to experience it with a positive and negative evaluation system. Problem number one: It's too easy. It's too plain and simple to "just pass". That said, how easy is it to lose sight of the end goal when you can do the bare minimum effortlessly and still get away with it? Letter grades measure a student's success, with letter grades there is competition to be exemplary, resulting in better grades among all types of students. With letter grades, students have the opportunity to stand out from the rest of those in their class. With letter grades there may be failure in the beginning, but with letter grades there is no reason to fail in the future.
