Uganda is located in East Africa and is divided into three main parts: a desert region, a plateau and swampy plains. This country borders Rwanda and Tanzania to the south, Kenya to the east, Congo to the west and Sudan to the north. Uganda's military systems are primarily run by the ferocious Lord's Resistance Army (LRA). The LRA is located in the northern part of Uganda and is made up of an estimated total of 45,000 soldiers, of which 15,000 are children aged between five and sixteen. Ugandan military personnel take control of children aged five years and above and turn them into a creation of destruction to protect the people of Uganda. Many children between the ages of five and twelve have witnessed traumatic events that no child of that age should even imagine happening in reality. “I will die happy if the first bullet kills me, I will die for the freedom of Kosova,” says 16-year-old Elinda Muriqie (Mazurana). Elinda was one of many children abducted at a young age. The LRA maintains a three-step system to brainwash young children into becoming part of the armed forces in Uganda, if they refuse to go the soldiers will kidnap the child no matter how old he or she is. The first step in brainwashing children is to abandon all hope of returning home (Mazurana). After hope is lost in the child's mind, then the soldier must make the child get bloodied by the act of murder, which in this case means that the soldier must make the child thrilled by the action taken for the murder (Mazurana) . The last step in brainwashing the child is to make the child have his own sense of esteem (Mazurana).
