Why the UK should convert to the euroPeople have always wondered why the UK still uses the pound. The United Kingdom, being a member of the European Union, should have converted to the euro by now. Although the pound gives the country its uniqueness and allows them to remember their country's history, it does not have as many advantages as the euro. So while the pound allows the UK to remember its country's history, the euro would prove more economically advantageous due to its international implications for trade and travel. BASIC INFORMATION Pound. The pound is the currency of the United Kingdom. The exchange rate is currently 0.60 pounds per 1 US dollar. In 1971 a change occurred that changed the way the pound was divided. Before 1971 it was divided into 20 shillings. Each shilling was then worth 12 pence. Overall, £1 was worth 240p. In 1971, they changed it so that it was instead divided into 100 pence (sterling).History of the United Kingdom. The United Kingdom has always been a very powerful country in the world. At one point the British Empire had control over nearly a quarter of the Earth's territory. However, the country had an economic decline after World War II (black).
