Diatoms are unicellular phytoplankton that survive by floating in the ocean and belong to the Bacillariophyta class. Diatoms are also the most common type of life in the ocean. This organism is similar to plants in the photosynthetic qualities it possesses. Diatoms use photosynthesis to absorb light, but the pigment they have is brown. These aspects link diatoms to brown algae. For this reason scientists usually place them in the plant kingdom but others today say that they belong to the Protista kingdom. They are not limited to aquatic environments, such organisms can be found throughout the world, even in terrestrial soil. It is estimated that there are between 5,000 and 10,000 species of diatoms (Miklasv, 2010). Diatoms have a unique characteristic. They live in an outer cell wall, or in a silica frustrula. This frustrule not only serves physical appearance, but provides protection and even structure. On the cell wall there are spines, spines and pores which allow us to classify diatoms into different classes, the centric (Centrobacillariophyceae) and the pennate (...
