This article will inform you a lot about Walter Dean Myers. Walter Milton Myers was born on August 12, 1937 in Martinsburg, West Virginia, but grew up in Harlem. His father's name was Geoorge Ambrose and his birth mother's name was Mary Myers. Walter Myers was an only child. He didn't really know his family. Walter's mother died when he was very young, about 3 years old. His father was very poor. Thus Walter was raised as an adopted son by the Dean family, from where he got his second surname. He was adopted by Herbert Julius, who was a clerk, and Florence Dean who was a factory worker. The Dean family moved him to Harlem. Myers developed a habit of writing poetry and short stories. From his adoptive parents he received the love that would ultimately strengthen him, even when he had forgotten its source. His adoptive mother, a half-Indian, half-German woman, who taught Walter to read, even though she was barely literate. She read True Romance Magazine to him every day. In time Walter learned to read well enough to begin reading the newspaper to his mother. After that, Walter began to read everything he could. His favorite thing to read at the time was comics, but he read almost everything with words. One day in class he was reading a comic, his teacher saw him reading, took it and then tore it up. His favorite place during his childhood, besides the basketball courts, was the library. The library ended up becoming his favorite place because he couldn't believe that one of the things he liked to do most, which was sit in one place and read whatever he wanted, was free. When Walter was staring at the gong in high school, those years were hard for him, due to the fact that he suffered from a speech impediment. But that little problem didn't stop him from writing.
