If you are looking for a long and healthy life, marriage could be one of the answers. According to many recent studies, a happy marriage can improve emotional, psychological and physical health. For many years, scientists have continued to document the “marriage advantage”: the fact that married people, on average, appear to be healthier and live longer than unmarried people (Parker). So it's true that being married can benefit your health. Since stress is the main factor in any disease, we know that too much unmanaged stress is harmful to our health. Researchers believe married couples work better as a team to manage stress. For example, married couples may share the duties of managing the home, earning money, and raising children. According to a major international study, which spanned fifteen countries and involved 34,493 people, marriage is beneficial for the mental health of both men and women and carries a lower risk of mental disorders such as anxiety, depression and other types of psychological distress. Parker). Marriage, which provides social and emotional support, can help reduce stress and anxiety. Studies also show that married couples have better health, such as a lower incidence of heart disease, stroke and cancer. A recent study from Tel Aviv University, based on 10,000 people, suggests that happy marriages can help prevent fatal strokes in men (Gupta 1). Single men had a 64% greater risk of fatal stroke than married men. Meanwhile, Brigham Young University professor Julianne Holt-Lunstad found that men and women in happy marriages scored four points lower in 24-hour blood pressure than single adults (Schneider1). This study shows that happily married couples have lower blood pressure than singles.
