“In a decaying society, art, if it is truthful, must also reflect decay. Furthermore, unless it wants to betray its social function, art must show the world as changing. And help change that. This quote from Ernst Fischer, a German composer, means that truth in art exposes the parts of society and life that no one wants to see. For art to change society, it must first reflect the fears and failures of its people. The artist can change the way people think about themselves and the world by using less conventional methods of artistic creation. The artist, in doing so, introduces new ideas about the human place in time and space, new frontiers of thought, which are promoted by the disciplines of science and philosophy. The artist works to introduce unique and sometimes offensive ideas so that society is exposed to new ways of thinking and understanding the world. The artist does this through experimentation with color, style and form. Therefore, the artist's aim should be to challenge how individuals perceive themselves and the offensive aspects of society reflected in art to bring about innovations in the larger society. Art is not useless as Oscar Wilde stated; nor is it the death of logic due to emotion as Plato supposed. Art is an activist that seeks to inform and shape social consciousness. Art by nature is critical and questions the way the world is perceived. These questions are critical to creating change within society. The Armory Show, a major turning point in American art, for example, was inspired by changing perceptions of aesthetics and a pull toward modernity. The Armory Show was an artistic rebellion against juries, prizes and limited exhibitions that excluded non-academic events and yet… middle of paper… it is something when it imitates nature and conveys historical or cultural facts. . Art is the exploration of what it means to be alive, to be human, and to struggle to understand one's role within society and identity in general. By stretching the limits of what is acceptable, the artist challenges preconceived ideas about what is ugly and beautiful, important and unimportant. These ideas in art and society are influenced by the emergence of new technologies that expand human understanding. As technology improves and human understanding is strengthened by these theories (both philosophical and scientific), art will always have a place. The artist's place is to criticize and express one's own and society's tendencies and attitudes. Even if these feelings are marginalized, their expression makes the audience aware of them and invites them to ask questions.
