Amogh Gokhale3-21-14Period 7-8Fuel Efficiency in AirplanesIntroductionWhether by air or sea, airplanes are the most common travel choice. This is due to their speed and efficiency. Even though they are efficient, they still have small disadvantages, including cost. Although planes are the fastest way to travel, they are very expensive. Aircraft can be more fuel efficient by changing the shape or type of fuel. How airplanes work The engine works by drawing in outside air using a fan. The fan then passes through a series of turbines that alternate between high and low pressure. Only 85% of the air passes through this series of turbines. The remaining 15% passes through a pressurizer surrounding the turbines. That air is superheated and is used as additional propulsion. Wings work because they are curved. They must be curved more up than down. This provides lift. The more curved your wings are, the more speed you need to lift. This requires more fuel. This, in turn, makes flights and fuel cost more. This can be reduced to (making the plane's wings less curly...
