Topic > CUSTOMS IN TWO DIFFERENT COUNTRIES - 856

Every country in the world has its own nationality and styles that they represent for the people living in that region. There are various ways to distinguish people between countries, such as each country's customs such as language, behaviors, etiquette, food, and manners that are easy to recognize in daily life. Vietnam and New Zealand have some cultural differences and are the best example to choose as a comparison due to the founding and influences of Western countries and America in the past on these countries. In this essay I will compare the customs between Vietnam and New Zealand regarding language; greeting; table etiquette. Vietnam and New Zealand have linguistic differences in aspects of tone, voice and sound. Vietnamese, the official language of Vietnam, has six tones in each syllable that can be used to form a meaningful word or phrase (Kwintessential, n.d.). Vietnamese also has three dialects, which are divided into three different regions such as North, Central, and South Vietnam, and are understood by most Vietnamese speakers (NC State University, n.d.). However, there are other languages spoken by ethnic minorities and tribes inhabiting mountainous areas (Kwintessential, n.d.). Unlike English, “Vietnamese verbs do not change form, articles are not used, and nouns have no plural endings, no prefixes, no suffixes, no definitives, and no distinctions between pronouns” (NC State University, n.d.). Due to the complicated alphabet and tones, Vietnamese is quite difficult for foreigners to learn or understand, which makes Vietnamese words more diverse. Unlike Vietnam, the three official languages in New Zealand are English, Maori and NZ Sign La...... middle of paper ......sion, the stricter the protocol (Kwintessential, n.d. ). They should keep their elbows off the table and their hands on the table while eating (Kwintessential, n.d.). When using utensils, the fork should be used in the left hand and the knife in the other (Kwintessential, n.d.). After finishing eating, folk and knife should be placed parallel on the plates (Kwintessential, n.d.). From my point of view, although there are some differences between the customs of the two countries, Vietnam and New Zealand still have similarities regarding greeting protocol and dining etiquette. Customs in Vietnam seem to be more different than in New Zealand because there are more protocols to follow and learn about. In conclusion, looking at customs is the best way to distinguish two different countries in the world and is also an opportunity to understand other people's culture..
