Introduction The police are usually entrusted with the great responsibility of ensuring that citizens live a quality life, free from crime and fear. To effectively carry out this task, the police need accurate and in-depth knowledge of citizens and the problems they encounter in their daily lives. This knowledge will not be easy to obtain if the police work independently of citizens. Over the past few decades, police agencies have worked to gain the respect and cooperation of the communities they serve. Community-oriented policing was introduced to bring the working relationship between citizens and the police closer. Community-Oriented PolicingCommunity-Oriented Policing (COP) is a concept that involves providing personalized policing services that are closer to the people and involve a proactive partnership with citizens (Pontiac Police Department, 2008). This concept allows for closer collaboration between the police and citizens in identifying and solving problems. The goal of COP is not responding to crime but rather preventing crime and solving community problems. The COP is based on the philosophy that police and citizens should collaborate and combine their efforts to solve contemporary challenges facing society. The main aim of the COP is to reduce the rate of crime and fear among communities. The COP recognizes that community involvement in law enforcement issues is vital to making significant progress in the fight against crime (Pontiac Police Department, 2008). Community participation provides the police with a new perspective on crime and means to control crimes. Even without community participation, police may continue to struggle to manage the response...... middle of paper ......ks Cited Kerley K. and Benson M. (2000).
