Close Poetry Reading AssignmentFor this assignment, I decided to write about a famous poem by Billy Collins entitled "Introduction to Poetry", written in 1996 . Billy Collins used specific metaphor, simile, rhyme, and personification in his poem "Introduction to Poetry" to show how one should better understand a poem. This poem focuses on what the poem really means and how a poem should be clearly understood. Throughout the poem, Billy Collins presented a clear way of understanding the poem using very interesting imagery, symbolism, metaphors and a very sensitive sound. The words used in this poem are so powerful that the readers are convinced to think about the issue presented in the poem. Overall, it expresses Collin's love and affection for this poem. This poem is basically watched, or listened to, and the rodent is tested. Such imagery used in the poem supports Collin's central ideas in the poem, that reading poetry must be, much like good exploration, an act of discovery. The poem has a very colloquial effect and a scholastic feel. The first stanza is directly connected to the second stanza, while the third and fourth stanzas of this poem contain distinct thoughts. Likewise, the six stanzas come next, but the mood has actually changed in the last two stanzas of the poem. In short, Collin wrote this poem in a very special and artistic way that really changes other people's idea on how to better understand a poem by knowing its true meaning. Billy Collins's "Introduction to Poetry" is not an ars poetica poem about writing poetry, but about reading poetry. The speaker is a teacher who tells his students that they should experience a poem, rather than analyze it. The f... middle of the paper... him because of our prejudices. Instead, we should spend more time and effort to observe carefully before judging someone. Furthermore, it also applies to the secondary school education system that students only learn by memorizing repeatedly, without in-depth understanding. Indeed, this poem sheds light on how we see things; therefore interpreting things, introducing the importance of experience”. (Yau) In other words, the words used by the poet are very powerful in giving the readers a vivid image of the poem which persuades them to a deep interpretation of this poem.
