Topic > Bunohan: A Noir Film Analysis - 2195

Figure 1 Ilham talks to Deng before Deng stabs him with a knife Film Noir which means black films in French, was actually coined by a French film critic, Nino Frank in 1946 , who began to notice that darkness, dark, mysterious and black themes could create a different and unique visual style in American films released in France after World War II. This style was used in films to reflect the tensions and depression of the time during the war. The characters in the films of that period showed feelings and emotions such as fear, desperation, pain and paranoia to reflect that terrible feeling of war. However, film noir began and was only popular in America and Europe, the style and characteristics of noir would have only been in the Western context. Would it be possible if it could be used in Asian films? How would they film it? It would be interesting to use the style in the Asian context. On the other hand, there is no specific definition of film noir and it is still a subject of debate. “We would be oversimplifying things if we called film noir dreamlike, strange, erotic, ambivalent, and cruel” (Borde & Chaumeton, 1955). However, Paul Schrader (1972) argues that film noir is not a genre, but rather is defined by more subtle stylistic qualities of tone and mood. He points out that film noir describes a specific period in cinema history, which refers to Hollywood films of the 1940s that primarily portray darkness in city streets, dim lights, crime, and corruption. Therefore it is only a matter of time that Asian directors started using the noir genre to create dark and complex plots for their films. There weren't many noir films before, but now the genre is becoming popular especially among independent filmmakers. They usually express their pain, sorrows and dissatisfaction with the world using the noir genre. Dain Said, Bunohan's director, said in an interview at the International Film Festival Rotterdam SlashingThrough: "This is the background of the film, I wanted to show the real world." I am not against land development, but most of the time we have done it completely wrong." Dark, gloomy, mysterious, confusing would be the things with which you would describe the atmosphere in the film "Bunohan". At first glance the DVD you would have thought it would be a film about the Boxers and immediately predicted the plot.
