Therefore, although some may adhere to this modern view of relationships, the truth is that it will not reap good fruits because it goes against the innate roles of human beings. The Marriage Solution: The first step in the marriage process means developing a solid foundation with the Creator. To have a healthy marriage with an imperfect human being, we must have a healthy relationship with the Lord Christ. Only in God will every marriage in the world be successful? Marriage is a lot like a mirror. It provides a reflection of our relationship with God. A healthy, successful marriage is the result of obedience to God and His Word and not conforming to the world's view of marriage. Roberto Hernandez in his book One Flesh states that “Until you find your first true love, your marriage will spiral out of control and that true love is God. His is a love that will never end. It is a true love, a love that has existed since the beginning of time." (Hernandez, Roberto p. 16) When we seek the Lord, He will give us the wisdom to experience a marriage as one. However, when a spouse turns their back on their spouse, they are turning their back on God, because He created the marriage, not us. According to Hernandez, “Eve was God's gift to Adam. He placed his hand in hers, making a perfect match. Without God, husbands and wives are imperfect couples, but with God the relationship is seen as a gift from God himself. We need to remember this and treat our marriages as such." (Hernandez, Roberto p. 16) It is clear in the Bible that the second step of marriage occurs when the husband and wife leave their father and mother, which means they must declare independence. If a spouse decides not to leave their parents, the result will be problems in the middle of a marriage, resulting in a lack of intimacy and unity. Every marriage will endure difficult times, but togetherness is key to building a godly marriage. Tim Keller explains union simply and comprehensively: “The text of Genesis calls what happens “union.” This archaic English term (which you can find in the King James Version) conveys the force of the Hebrew verb, which modern translations render “united with.” It is a Hebrew word that literally means to be glued to something. Elsewhere in the Bible, the word “join” means to join with someone by covenant, binding promise, or oath.” (Keller, p.75). Marriage is the union of two separate people who become one person. The contract unites both people, evolving into a single legal, social, economic unit, no longer having the independence they once had. They completely give up everything to the other.
