The magnificent coral reefs that tickle the joy of our minds; this is the world as we would always like it to be. In this great carnival of life, thousands of colorful characters coexist, diversity strengthens the coral reefs. These underwater playgrounds are built from hard corals that produce limestone and turn it into homes. How wonderful that the largest living structures on earth are built by small animals! Coral reefs are essential for spawning, nursery, reproduction and feeding of numerous organisms. According to NOAA, “more than 25% of the world's fish biodiversity, and between 9 and 12% of the world's total fisheries, are associated with coral reefs.” They help prevent erosion and flooding by reducing wave action along coastlines and providing sediment that becomes part of beaches. They also protect coasts during natural disasters such as storms. Furthermore, another advantage of coral reefs is tourism. Coral reefs provide habitat for important recreational and subsistence fisheries. Many tropical countries like Grenada rely on tourism to generate revenue to support local economies. As stated by NOAA, “Caribbean countries that attract millions of visitors to their beaches and coral reefs each year derive, on average, half of their gross domestic product from the tourism industry.” When humans are injured, doctors use calcium carbonate from corals to repair our broken bones, and coral reef chemicals can restore our health, relieve chronic pain and facilitate childbirth, and even prolong the lives of sufferers of AIDS. No place in the world has such great potential for medical care. Coral reefs are dying at an alarming rate around the world and Grenada is not immune to this threat. A third part of the document aims to include climate change adaptation measures, which reduce the vulnerability of coral reef-dependent populations. Furthermore, active government institutions, regulations and enforcement mechanisms also play an important role in enabling all stakeholders to meaningfully contribute to coral reef protection. Conclusion In this article on the marine environment, I have discussed its significance, threats and conservation methods. I firmly believe that the protection of coral reefs is critical and should be understood as a means towards the sustainable management and development of many small island nations like Grenada and the world. Corals appear to be dying faster than normal and the trend is rapidly increasing. If this happens, then something inside me will also die. Coral reefs survive through partnership, and the most important partners corals have are you and me.
