Schumacher writes “However, to believe or not to believe is not the issue here. The point is that without the qualitative concepts of “superior” and “inferior” it is impossible to even think of guidelines for living that take us beyond utilitarianism and individual or collective selfishness”. The meaning of this quote applies to the concepts of philosophical maps, levels of beings, and adequatio. Schumacher is basically trying to imply that without understanding that higher or lower conscious being we cannot fully be able to understand the guidelines for living a full life. The philosophical map concepts discussed in the first chapter highlight what goes into a philosophical map and what does not. In the book “A Guide for the Perplexed” by Schumacher the author tries to explain what a philosophical map is in the first chapter. He is saying that in life what we see before our eyes is not on the maps. The author thinks that historically famous scientists spent their time and wealth on non-existent things. That people spend their wealth on gods, which he says is incomprehensible: “Huge amounts of hard-earned wealth have been squandered throughout history on the honor and glory of imaginary deities, not only by my European ancestors, but by all people, in all parts of the world. the world, at all times” (Schumacher,2). Back then, people didn't know about natural selection or evolution, that's why people created myths about gods as creators. The author says that the map did not show unorthodox events and theories in medicine, agriculture and several fields such as paranormal activities. That philosophical maps “real knowledge, designed for real life, showed nothing but things that supposedly could be proven… in the middle of the paper… just an object. Schumacher explains that this is how data distinguishes between perception and interpretation. That the mind is always working to put things in perspective even if not all the data is there. That the meaning behind an object can only be known by those who know the object. He also explains that the data perceived by those with less intelligence are not errors but rather an inadequate vision of reality. This relates to the quote because by understanding the higher and the lower here we know that the higher intellectual will have the true sense of reality and be able to determine the deeper meaning compared to the lower one would have a very limited view of reality. Without this determination it would be impossible to think about the tricks mentioned in the quote because only with a true sense of reality can guidelines truly be established.
