Stories can be judged in many different ways, but what makes a good story are all the elements of the stories that correspond to the central idea, an interesting and stimulating story and the presence of a character recognizable or interesting. The elements must link together to help the reader make connections throughout the story and, in turn, understand the overall idea. The story itself must be engaging otherwise the reader will not feel enticed enough to analyze the story, let alone read it. Finally, the characters in the story must appeal to the reader with an interesting personality, or they must be easy to associate with, so that the reader wants to see what happens to the character next. “Nobody Listens When I Talk,” by Annette Sanford is the story of a girl and a summer in her adolescence. Marilyn, the girl who is experiencing the summer, is sitting on the porch swing because she has a broken leg. While Marilyn sits on the swing, people start telling her that she should experience life, instead of wasting it on the swing. Her mother tells her that she should get up and do things like cooking or cleaning. Her father tells her that she should take advantage of that she is young and carefree. Her friend tells her that she should meet many different guys. All these people tell her what she should do in her life, but she never really pays attention to any of the suggestions. because she believes that even if she said her opinion on the matter, no one would listen to her. So instead she sits down and recalls the memories of her past. With her lack of activity she becomes one with the world she lives in; she doesn't... middle of paper ......or you are and accept yourself. Now, with this story there isn't a lot of language to back that up, but when it comes to point of view it more than makes up for it. The story makes the reader think about who he is and wonder if he is okay with it. It is this provocation of thought that captures the reader and makes him want to read more and delve deeper into himself to discover more about who he is. The character, Marilyn, is very bland at first, but as you read on she becomes very relatable, and it almost feels like we were in her place experiencing the constant conflict between who she is and who everyone wants her to be. We hope that he can overcome this obstacle and become a better person; however, it's still very conflicted at the end, making it even more relatable in real life, because not everything can end happily ever after..
