During the Victorian Age, 1830-1901, society had firm opinions about how they believed women should behave. Opinions, however, changed and varied greatly over the 71 years that constituted the Victorian period. Towards the beginning of that era women were seen as the fairer sex and most of their early life was spent in preparation for marriage. During the Victorian era, however, society brought about numerous social, political, and economic changes, as well as seeing the creation of many new gadgets. As society evolved throughout the Victorian era to become more advanced, it also became more aware of the need to treat women as equals in rights, work, pastimes, and opinions. An example of inequality that women faced during that time was when men maintained the appearance of being part of a loving family, all the while cheating on their wives and betraying their families (Frost 196). As horrible as it was for husbands to cheat on their wives, that wasn't the issue at the time. The part about cheating in that era that bothered society was that if a woman committed the same violation and was unfaithful in a marriage she would be publicly shamed (Frost 196). It is because of this injustice to women, and the many other examples of inequality they faced during the Victorian era, that the English wished to reform marriage. They felt that the structure of marriage was unfair to the women involved. By the end of the era, much ground had been made towards female equality. Instead of women doing everything in the home for the entire family, families began buying their own clothes (Burman 80). This change was seen as important because it signifies the rise of feminism, meaning that more and more individuals were beginning to support women and their plight (Burman 80). As more jobs became available for women, more homemakers were lost, which meant that everything wives and mothers did and cared for in the home now had to be available from outside sources (Burman 80 ).
