Leadership, according to Bartol and Martin (1998: 415) is the process of “influencing others to achieve organizational objectives”. Tannenbaum defines leadership as interpersonal influence exerted in a situation through communication to achieve goals. Goals can be personal, group, organizational or functional. Putti, Koontz and Weihrich (1998: 300) think of leadership as a relationship based on position, power and ability involving individuals and groups.
