The legal drinking age in the United States is twenty-one. Only a few countries have the same high age limit for drinking alcohol. In fact, some countries have absolutely no limit on the age at which a person can legally drink alcohol. Many groups openly express their desire to see the legal drinking age lowered. Part of their argument stems from the fact that in most areas of life a person is accepted as an adult at the age of eighteen. They can vote, serve in the military and in most cases get married. With this amount of responsibility, why shouldn't they be allowed to start drinking legally at the same age? Some people say that lowering the drinking age can help a parent teach their children how to drink responsibly before they turn twenty-one. Indeed, this question is worth considering because everything must be learned. Therefore, children can be taught how to drink responsibly. Ruth C. Engs, a professor at Indiana University, is one of the people who support this thesis. According to Professor Ruth C. the legal drinking age should be lowered to eighteen allowing young adults to drink in controlled environments. Furthermore, children will be able to drink in the presence of their parents or other responsible adults. However, most states do not allow teenagers to consume alcohol in the presence of their parents or legal guardian before the age of twenty-one. The twenty-one age limit pushes young people to drink faster. Since it is difficult to obtain alcohol, when they do they drink a lot and quickly. They drink to get drunk while playing.
