“Success is going from one failure to another without losing enthusiasm” (Winston Churchill). To be sure, Sir Andrew's equation is not one of lasting enthusiasm. But Sir Andrew is a man who is very familiar to the people of Illyria and modern readers of Shakespeare's Twelfth Night as an unintelligent, cowardly and arrogant foolish knight who would have absolutely no success if he lived in 2014. It is clear to anyone that Sir Andrew Aguecheek was inserted into Twelfth Night to comically please Shakespeare's audience. His stupid, yet bloody, attitude and personality towards others wouldn't prove it otherwise. Like a leech sucking blood, Sir Andrew sucks attention and converts it into something that would make the reader laugh at his failures. If he were transported to modern 2014 he would fail to succeed, but the real question is how? For starters, Sir Andrew would not be successful if he lived in 2014 because he is not intelligent. He lacks the knowledge to understand the circumstances in which he finds himself. This is most evident throughout the story as he is constantly used by Sir Toby, both Sir Andrew's money and dignity are drained down the sink. Sir Andrew's obvious stupidity has led Fabian to wonder if he is “a dear dummy to…Sir Toby” (3.2 49)? Sir Toby reveals that he had simply "been dear to him... about 2000 people or so" (3.2 50) indicating that Sir Andrew is not aware that he has been deceived, but someone of much lower status and education (Fabian and Feste) can easily understand what is happening. Constantly overlooking the simplest situations will not allow Sir Andrew to succeed in 2014 because he will be cons...... middle of paper ......n arrogant. As Winston Churchill said, “Success consists in going from one failure to another without losing enthusiasm”. Unfortunately for Sir Andrew he goes from failure to failure with a constant loss of enthusiasm. He would try to do something good in 2014, but it would only attract negative attention, just like blood attracts leeches. Sir Andrew is extremely lucky to live in a time where his hilarious but upsetting qualities don't harm him as much as they would if he lived in 2014. However, if he lived in 2014, he would be begging God to "have mercy." on” (3.4 161) his soul. Works Cited Churchill, Winston. “Quotes About Success.” Clever quote.
