Topic > PAS: Every Patient's Right - 1613

As a congressman from the state of Oregon which currently has a regulated physician-assisted suicide program for the terminally ill, I am writing to you today, Mr. Blumenauer, to possibly convince you of draft a national law to legalize PAS for the United States specifically for terminally ill patients. As you may know, the debate on this topic has been going on for quite some time. Many Americans fear that legalizing PAS could create problems that could lead to abuse and failure to advance medicine. Because of this fear, I think you are the best person to draft this bill because you know what works and what doesn't. This also makes you well-suited to advance the conversation currently underway about the legalization of PAS. With three other states currently trying to pass a bill that will give sick patients the choice of assisted suicide, as well as the statistic that most Americans have no problems with PAS when connected to terminally ill patients , I think it's time for it to be legalized in all states. The reason I want this to happen is because of the patient's right to life and death, it is perfectly legal for patients to legally refuse treatment, so PAS should not be illegal and in a way it is a humane way to put end someone's life. To please both parties, I believe there should be strict restrictions when it comes to PAS. I think your home state's model (the Death with Dignity Act) is a perfect compromise because it has restrictions such as an age limit, which only allows patients with a terminal illness that will lead to death within six months, and the ability to the patient to make a sound decision that will clearly satisfy both parties.
