About 97% belongs to the Galapagos National Park. The rest of the 3% belongs to inhabited areas. All islands cover approximately 7,500 square feet. This is a satellite image of the islands. The Galapagos Islands became a national park around 1959. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site around 1978. The surrounding ocean was also declared a marine biological reserve, and in 1990 it became something of a whale paradise.
