The European settlers and the Native Americans of North America had very different opinions about almost everything they encountered in their lives. Living in very different cultures leads both groups to have two extremely different points of view on four main topics; religious beliefs, environment, social relationships and slavery, differences that the colonists exploited to their advantage during the conquest of the peoples of the New World. The colonists, claiming that Native Americans were primitive and savage because of their diverse and seemingly illogical attitudes, were able to do things they could never do to people they believed to be equals. Whether this was a conscious or unconscious method on the part of the Europeans remains a much debated topic, but the fact remains that by emphasizing the differences of the two major cultures as a negative sign denoting European superiority, the colonists were able to conquer the lands of Native Americans. and goods without too many remorses. When this country began, there were few European settlers with the modern perspective of tolerance towards different cultures. Almost no one attempted to learn about Indian culture, very few adopted it as their own, and the majority were often fearful and anxious about their new neighbors. These four major differences in religious beliefs, environment, social relationships, and slavery were what sparked the mistreatment of Native Americans, atrocious treatment that would continue for the next three hundred years in America.
