APPLICATION AND CURRENT RESEARCH (in relation to contemporary media) The four contemporary articles that will be analyzed reflect current research on media rituals and contemporary technologies. The research of these authors (Anderson, Bilic, Csaszi and Maj) focused on expanding the concept of media rituals and their applications, with particular reference to digital forms and the internet. By critically analyzing the content of these authors' essays, this will further explain the significance of media rituals in everyday life. Siblings in Cyberspace: Carey's Ritual Model of Communication in the Digital Age by Helen Anderson (2011) First, Helen Anderson's essay “Siblings in Cyberspace: Carey's Ritual Model of Communication in the Digital Age” exemplifies the notion of contemporary media rituals in relation to Youtube. Through a case study of “vlogbrothers” John and Hank Green and their YouTube videos, Anderson connects their “Brotherhood 2.0” video series to Carey's ritual model of communication. In contrast to Carey's “transmission model” of communication, in which the media is seen as transmitting signals going back and forth, the “ritual model” focuses instead on the concepts surrounding “sharing,” “participation.” and “communion” (Anderson, 2011, p. .93). Therefore, the ritual model is reminiscent of Youtube culture and the “Brotherhood 2.0” project. The “vlogbrothers,” realizing that they were spending too much time using text-based forms of communication such as texting, email, and instant messaging (which itself has become ritualized), decided to “fight technology with technology” (Anderson, 2011, p. 93).
