A wolf and a dog are the same species. They even have the same DNA. Hunting dogs are more closely related to wolves. Some people long ago tried to breed dogs by changing their characteristics. For example, a Dobermanpinscher had most of its tail cut off. Now they have such little tails! A corgi has a natural tail. A Great Dane has had his ears surgically cropped so they stand upright. A Scottish Terrier appears to have a beard, but it's just that the hair on the neck has been shaved off. After common breeds were created, owners assigned dogs jobs based on their qualities.
