The CareGroup Case Study consisted of several components. The key concepts were broken down into CareGroup's history itself, CareGroup's IT, the network collapse, managing the network collapse, and the lessons learned from the entire situation (McFarlan, F. Warren, and Robert D. Austin, pg .1).CareGroup was formed based on three major Massachusetts hospitals; Beth Israel, Deaconess and Mount Auburn (McFarlan, F. Warren and Robert D. Austin, p.1). After a surprising merger of Mass General and Brigham and Women's Hospital, all three CareGroup hospitals suffered severe financial losses (McFarlan, F. Warren, and Robert D. Austin, p. 2). Due to multimillion-dollar financial losses, CareGroup felt it needed a change, and so it added Halamka to its team, naming him CIO (McFarlan, F. Warren, and Robert D. Austin, p. 3). Finding themselves in a difficult financial situation, it is undoubtedly crucial for a new CIO to possess the technical skills and knowledge necessary to manage a healthcare facility. In reference to this point, Halamka had stated: “...I know all the technologies, program in 12 languages and have written books on Unix system administration. I'm a doctor, so I understand the clinical setting and the technical requirements” (McFarlan, F. Warren and Robert D. Austin, p. 3). Clearly this exemplifies his qualifications as a newly installed CIO. The technology used by CareGroup at the time was described as "antiquated" (McFarlan, F. Warren and Robert D. Austin, p. 3), and soon, all hospitals were using the Meditech system (McFarlan, F. Warren and Robert D . Austin, page 4). The Meditech system was a huge improvement for CareGroup, as the technology was much more...half paper......what about a phone outage?" HIMSS.
