Topic > My experience at Buttonwood Park Zoo - 1655

I think my internship goals have changed, at first I was more interested in working in a zoo and I was really excited to work at Buttonwood Park Zoo with the otters , but after housing complications and other personal problems. I couldn't complete my internship there. I think that was the first thing that changed my goals. After completing my internship at the Center for Wildlife, I realized that I really enjoy the upbeat pace of working in a rehabilitation center and would really like to move forward with working in one. My career goals before the internship were more zoo related, with some rehabilitation afterward along with some research projects. I think continuing to get experience in the zoo would be great, to say I've done it, but I think right now my main focus is there's going to be rehabilitation. I have also considered the idea of undertaking a job as a veterinary technician, to delve deeper into the medical aspect of rehabilitation and gain more experience in administering drugs and managing injured animals. At the moment I think that a veterinary practice for dogs and felines would be a good thing, with the eventual move to exotic animals and larger mammals like cattle, etc. I feel I am most helpful and rewarding when I can help rehabilitate injured wildlife back to their natural habitat, as well as educating the community on ways they can help in their own backyard, I think an important part of rehabilitation is also making the community aware of what can be done to avoid harm to wildlife. Working at the Center for Wildlife has had a huge impact on my personal growth in many ways. The center was my first experience beyond classes working in my field, so I will always hold a special place for the center, especially with the...... center of the card...... such a unique individual in a their way in general. I think I contributed my ideas to the center just like everyone else did. One thing I really liked was that the group of interns that started with me were all from different states and each had their own experiences and their own ways of doing things that you are always learning new ways and easier ways to complete tasks. One of the reasons they have older interns train newer interns is because we see the same patient almost every day while a staff member may not see those patients every day. We learn the tricks of getting into the enclosure, or getting the patient out of the cage, where he prefers to put his food and water, and how to calmly age him when he is given medications. I can't say that there is one in particular that is important because they are all very important for the proper functioning of the center.
