Topic > Representations of Masculinity in Films Tough Guise and…

Tough Guise is a documentary about how the media constructs, how male masculinity is formed, and what it means to be a man in our society today. The man speaking in the film talks about how there is a crisis in masculinity today. Argue that there is a crisis in masculinity today and that everything bad usually happens because a man did it. The media advertises and describes how men should act, but often the way men are portrayed in the media involves acts of violence and humiliation of women. Some of the examples in the movie included WWE wrestling, going to school and asking students what they would be called if they didn't act tough like soft, fag etc. The music of these artists (neighborhood boys) shows African males behaving like thugs and making money is the way boys should behave. Another part of the film showed how all the students who shot up a school were men. But the media would never say that men are responsible for all the bad things that happen in the world, such as war. If women were in power I really doubt there would be so much violence in the world. In my conclusion, it is not only the media and video games that shape kids, but also everyday society. Violence seems to be a normal everyday thing that happens around us and is a normal masculinity for men. This video enlightened me to reconsider my participation in masculinity. Ocean's Eleven I chose the movie Ocean's Eleven, this movie was one of my favorites growing up. I looked at these stars and felt that they were what a real man should be like. It's about a group of con men and ex-cons who work together on a big heist to steal $150 million from a Las Vegas vault. The main character is Danny Ocean, he just got out of prison and he looks like... middle of paper... cho men, I haven't seen any movie yet where a non-macho man is the movie star. All these good guys also have the best timing, they always reach the goal with perfect timing, if they were one second away everything would fail. According to my conclusion, the media plays an important role in the way men's masculinities are, if the media decided choosing being a man meant wearing pink and doing ballet, then it would be fine. Since the media says that to be a man you have to degrade women, objectify them and be really strong, this is what you have to do in society to be considered a real man. They make it seem like they have no emotions or feelings and are careless about what they do to others. Are we responsible for this male lifestyle? Masculinities are constantly changing, who knows what the norm of male masculinity will be in the next ten years.
