How can attendance management be used most effectively in your organization? The National Strategy for a Healthy Police Service was implemented on 18 May 2007 with specific objectives which are to:-• Promote the cause of good health and safety management, highlighting the business benefits, legal obligations and benefits to the wellbeing of police officers and staff.• Promote effective safety management systems that include visible leadership from chief officers and their command teams.• Communicate and share good ideas across the NPIA and various forces, to ensure enforcement spread of benefits to/for all forces.• Establish standards that reflect best practice and use available experience and knowledge across the service to ensure mechanisms are in place to achieve agreed standards.• Work in partnership with and through , other agencies to improve health and safety. • Support action plans and campaigns designed to build on past achievements. • Provide information and inform all parties about relevant standards, legislation and codes of practice, ensuring consultation on legislative changes that impact on the service's ability to deliver this strategy. To achieve this, agreements and responsibilities have been established among various parties with vested interests which included the National Police Improvement Agency, in collaboration with Chief Officers, the ACPO, the Police Authorities, the HMIC in collaboration with the HSE, the Research Directorate, development and statistics and the Home Office. The underlying intention derives from that supported by the Government's Ministerial Task Force document 'Managing Sickness Absence in the Public Sector' (publication November 2004) and is to be applied to all aspects of the public sector workforce and so far in recent 9 years , the police service has been more successful than most of its public sector counterparts in reducing absences. The aim therefore of this new strategy is to continue to seek reductions in absences due to health problems or accidents by setting the following objectives:-•Reduce the number of absences number of working days lost due to accidents at work and work-related illnesses , by 30% by 2010; • Reduce the incidence rate of deaths and serious injuries by 10% by 2010; • Reduce the incidence of work-related illnesses by 20% by 2010; • Reduce the number of working days lost due to work-related illnesses by 30%. 2010
