Human rights violations occur daily in Malaysia. Recently, according to the Associated Press in an article published in The Hindu, approximately 25,000 protesters gathered on the streets of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, demanding electoral reforms before the next national elections (Associated Press, 2012). The police fired “tear gas and water mixed with stinging chemicals” into the crowd of demonstrators in retaliation for the demonstrators' violation of pre-established barriers (Associated Press, 2012). However, before that, there were several hours of peaceful protest. Authorities claimed that protesters had no right to use Independent Square, “a symbolically important location that hosts high-profile parades and celebrations” as a protest site (Associated Press, 2012). Activists believe the Election Commission is biased, citing falsified voter lists and concerns that Prime Minister Najib Razak's ruling coalition has an "unfair advantage" in the election. (Pressa Associated, 2012). While elections do not need to be held before mid-2013, previous reports say Najib may dissolve Parliament next month and seek a new mandate in June. Other demands include longer campaign times and postal voting problems, and although Foreign Minister Anifah Aman admits there are problems, officials believe many of these concerns are overblown (Associated Press, 2012). While the protest deserves consideration, first and foremost, what this event demonstrates is the continued disregard for human rights and fundamental freedoms in Malaysia. Clearly, the government's response to this protest supports the rejection of human rights and fundamental freedoms for Malaysian citizens.
