Who is Christ? What is Christianity? What is the Church? Who are his people? Many have contributed to questions of spirituality, to questions of faith. Many reflected on the Church community and its believers, their identity and beliefs. Many Christian theologians desired to communicate these topics so that Christians could gain a better understanding of Christianity and, in turn, gain a stronger spirituality. Among these theologians is Dietrich Bonhoeffer, whose writings have greatly influenced Christian thinking about Christ and his people. It is impossible not to encounter Christ in one's life, so man is faced with the decision to accept or deny Christ. Since human reason cannot ask “How?” when it comes to Christ, since human reason has no capacity to understand anything beyond its own being, man is "stretched to the limit by the question: Who?" (49). Yet asking “who” Christ is is in itself a difficulty. Christ, or the divine Logos, reveals himself to man and it is up to man himself to answer his own question. Who Christ is is who He is to the individual. However, if you want to achieve an accurate identity of Christ, you must understand this. To understand him one must “engage… with him in a clear 'either-or'”: either Christ or the world (Bonhoeffer, 43). Committing to Christ means allowing Him to take control. It is during this commitment that one learns “the grace and love of God that [culminated] in the cross” (47). But what does it mean to follow Christ? Bonhoeffer emphasizes the importance of discipleship. Man cannot live on cheap grace, for it is the “grace we give to ourselves” (54), and his Christian faith will collapse. True grace has a cost and that is a life to serve Christ...... middle of paper ......t, our conscience, that is, our will and reason, is freed and at the same time surrendered. Once again, Christ should be the center of one's life. Christ must be our conscience, our success. He places blame on the individual and the community because “[the Christian's] responsibility is bound by conscience” (104). Dietrich Bonhoeffer shed light on many issues regarding the Christian life. Since Christ should be the center of the Christian and the church community, discipleship should be a key factor in the communion of Christ. Through Christ we are united with God by guiding those who love him. However, no one is excluded from the suffering, from the evils of the world. However, the true Christian can come to love such suffering because such trials strengthen the Christian faith. Only in Christ does man succeed. Only in Christ is man victorious. Only in Christ is man free.
