The Golden Age of Comics was perhaps the greatest era in the history of comics. Many people loved comics during this time because they were all stories about good triumphing over evil. Many of these stories reflect on historical events in the time period. “Pro-American characters were popular due to the time period occurring primarily during World War II.” (PBS) “The precise era of the Golden Age is disputed, although most agree that it began with the launch of Superman in 1938.” (PBS) The enormous success of Superman created many spin-off superheroes such as Wonder Woman, Green Lantern and the Flash, who had superpowers and secret identities. One of these spin-offs was Captain America. Part of Timely Comics and created by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby, Captain America ended up being arguably the most popular superhero during the Golden Age. Captain America is not like your average superhero. Captain America, or his alter ego Steve Rogers, was a frail young man who was chosen by scientist Abraham Erskine to be tested with his experimental serum. That experimental serum transformed Rogers from a weak, scrawny youth to the pinnacle of human perfection. Soon after, a Nazi spy appeared and shot Erskine, killing him. “To prevent Nazi spies from obtaining the serum, Erskine had not written down the ingredients of the serum, along with much of the procedure, but had instead committed them to memory.” (Comic Vine) Rogers was the only manifested super soldier. Equipped with a patriotic costume and a shield that is not only nearly indestructible but is used as a weapon, Captain America was born. During the time Captain America was born, World War II was underway. "He was a superhero whose entire creation was based on helping the...... middle of paper......heather" Comic Vine.
