To Create a Better World When working for peace or any other aspect of social change, there are often difficulties to overcome. You must deeply believe that what you are doing is right, otherwise you may become discouraged and give up. I have discovered that there are no easy solutions to problems involving social change. When you commit to creating a better world, you most likely commit to a lifelong commitment. To be successful, you must be willing to persevere in your efforts and you must maintain a positive and hopeful attitude. In this work, it is often unclear who you are reaching or whether change is occurring. Therefore, you must trust that your work for a better world matters. Sometimes change occurs beneath the surface, as a result of many individual actions, and suddenly the results become evident, as in the case of the fall of the Berlin Wall, the collapse of the former Soviet Union, and the end of apartheid in the South. Africa. .The most rewarding life is one in which there is an important element of service to others. Many people find a way to do this in their life. Of course, there are many ways in which an individual can be helpful to others. Some of the biggest global problems, however, remain largely unsolved by most of us, and I think this is an area where young people can make an important contribution. We have many global problems, but we lack global institutions powerful enough to effectively address problems such as global terrorism, human rights violations, global warming, the ozone layer, pollution of oceans and rivers, the arms trade, child soldiers, war, the weaponization of space, and nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction. Finding a way to participate in solving these and other global problems is one of the great challenges of our time. Global problems require global solutions. They also require citizens of the world who identify with and give their loyalty to humanity and the web of life. Patriotism takes on new dimensions and becomes umatriotism, loyalty to humanity. Changing the world requires new thinking and new loyalties that transcend the nation-state. These views may put some segments of society at odds, but if some individuals do not have the vision and courage to venture beyond the confines of conformity, change will never happen..
