On August 21, 1959, a small inhabited colony of Polynesian volcanic rock located in the middle of the Pacific Ocean became the fiftieth state called "Hawai'i". Before Hawaii became the fiftieth state, foreigners from the United States attempted to annex Hawaii from its people and the Hawaiian monarch for political and military gain. It all started way back in 1893, when Hawaii was ruled by Hawaiian kings and queens. All three annexation attempts by U.S. diplomats and foreigners failed until 1959, when Hawaii declared statehood. The U.S. government and its political leaders celebrated along with a small portion of native islanders, but saddened and dismayed most natives felt that the island had been taken from them; I cried with sadness and anger knowing that the Hawaiian monarch and his culture were diminishing. To this day there are many Native Hawaiians and local groups who believe that the state of Hawaii is false and that Hawaii was stolen from its monarch and his people. How did the island of Hawai'i become a US state? In 1893, United States diplomats landed in Hawaii declaring themselves the provisional government as they represented Hawaii to the Secretary and Senate of the United States to obtain annexation of Hawaii. The Secretary of the United States; President Benjamin Harrison signed the treaty to annex Hawaii, but before the Senate ratification could react, a new president was elected. President Grover Cleveland received a letter of protest from Queen Liliuokalani on behalf of her people stating that U.S. diplomats and troops had landed illegally on the territory of Hawaii. President Cleveland intervened and sent to US Co... in the middle of the document... causing the character to be destroyed. Since 2014, Hawaii has continued a battle that began long ago, when kings and queens ruled the island, and has been waged with great esteem and utmost respect. Even as the battle continues to take over Hawaii and its people and America advances, the Kingdom of Hawai'i will always remain in the hearts of the island's natives near and far.
