Some would have us believe that the human eye – indeed, every organ of our body – was born by chance; that somehow thousands of accidents of nature aligned to create the well-ordered organism that humankind clearly is. But nowhere can we find more evidence of man's creation by a benevolent God than in the human eye. The human eye is a marvel of biology, and its immense complexity, beauty, and perfection defy explanation even by the most devout proponents of evolutionary theory, which can only leave us with the fact of God's existence and intuition: “So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them” (Genesis 1:27). The human eye is much more complex than one of humanity's most advanced creations, the computer chip. A single human eye has 130 million light-sensitive rods and cones that convert light into chemical impulses, and these signals subsequently travel at a speed of about a billion per second to the brain. The range of sensitivity of the eye, which provides humanity with excellent vision during bright, sunny days as well as during dark, moonlit nights, far exceeds the visual capabilities of any human-made film. Now consider that we possess not just one eye, but two. This matching pair, coupled with an interpretive center in the brain, allows us to determine distances to objects we see. Additionally, our eyes have the ability to automatically focus on near or far objects by stretching or compressing. The eyes are also inserted under a hard, bony forehead which – in addition to the automatic shutters we have, in the form of eyelids – provides shelter and security to these delicate... middle of paper... of superior intelligence. The human body and its individual components, frankly, are masterpieces of God's engineering, for “I am fearfully and wonderfully made” (Psalm 139:14). Works Cited1.
