Two-way bilingual immersion programs not only create higher-achieving students, but also better equipped and confident students. Academically, TWBI students receive higher grades because of the curriculum. Additionally, 87% to 93% of TWBI alumni said they would not drop out (Lindholm-Leary). In fact, the knowledge acquired allows students to become more resilient, adapting to the new language; independent, understanding the language on their own; and confident, proud of bilingualism. The TWBI program not only teaches another language, but also another culture. One of the goals of the program orients students toward cultural awareness by exposing the customs of other countries through song, dance and festivities. With this education provided to students, they could successfully compete for a place in the competitive global economy. TWBI students have the advantage of working all over the world because they can speak two languages, and because their knowledge helps create a more flexible and resourceful worker, students can identify and solve problems faster. The U.S. government could also benefit from students' bilingualism for matters of national security, diplomacy, and other global government programs. Students also benefit in the world of science when research takes them around the world, giving them more countries as options. And students who simply travel to other countries to test their skills and fully immerse themselves in the culture gain experience, knowledge and memories. Bilingualism opens many doors of opportunities and benefits, not only for the individual but also for the country. As more and more two-way bilingual immersion schools open, the rest of the United States should follow suit, basing their programs on... .middle of paper......ent must remain patient and let i programs teach their children. The American education system gets a lot of attention these days as critics blame our shortcomings on students who lack the skills and knowledge needed to succeed. a changing world with an intertwined global economy. The sooner America recognizes the need to move to a two-way immersion program, emphasizing the learning of English and another language, the better students will be able to compete for jobs and create a more secure future. Two-way immersion provides academic and neurological growth; creates job opportunities; and fosters the confidence needed to play a meaningful role in today's global economy. Perhaps, America needs to take a fresh look at the country to recognize, as Columbus must have done many years ago, “Esta tierra es muy prometedor.” - “this land has great promise.”
