A philosophy that goes beyond the accepted role of the classroom discussed above. The critical factor is the removal of parents from home. Many families are headed by a single parent or both parents are required to provide wages only for the maintenance of necessities. Whatever the reason, for many hours a day there is simply no one home. This situation caused a crisis! Students no longer come to school ready to learn the basics, or the three Rs, as reading, writing and arithmetic are called. The goals of economic sustainability, good citizenship, and other social virtues are even more difficult to achieve when these children have not had the opportunity to learn the basic customs of our society (Martin, 1995, p. 355-56). Therefore, we as Educators are assigned the problem of correcting the situation as best as possible. To address this problem, Jane Roland Martin developed a new philosophy.
