Topic > What are the disadvantages of distracted driving?

There are three different types of distracted driving; visual, manual and cognitive. These distractions caused 3,331 deaths in 2011. These distractions also caused 387,000 injuries in 2011 (“Distracted”). These numbers would be significantly lower if there were stricter laws against distracted driving across the country. The most dangerous type of distracted driving is visual driving. A visual distraction is something that causes someone to take their eyes off the road (“Distraction”). While traveling at a speed of 55 miles per hour, it takes only 5 seconds to travel the length of a football field (Marino). Traveling that distance without looking at the road will end up hitting an animal, another car, or even worse, another person. A manual distraction, which involves a person taking their hands off the wheel, relates to distracted driving, such as skateboarding. They are masters at skateboarding and have never broken a bone in their body while doing so. However, if we, who had no idea how to skateboard, tried to do so, we would definitely get injured. Texting while driving is just a skill that needs to be mastered. It's obvious not to text while turning, but it's perfectly safe to do so while stopped and proceeding at a traffic light or stop sign. It is also safe to text and drive on desolate roads or highways, because there is less chance of having an accident. Finally, the law cannot be applied justly. Officers are never seen stopping people to text (for free). Another reason why people are against texting while driving is because it only replaces worse distractions. If there were laws against texting while driving, then we would start to see an increase in people distracting themselves by reading the newspaper, putting on makeup, eating fast food, or even shaving behind the wheel. Texting while driving by law will simply give people reasons to find other things to distract themselves
