Gummy candy Around the world, small, sweet, sugar-filled candies bring enjoyment to those who consume them. What are these little pleasure-inducing treats? The answer is gummies. Jellies are produced in numerous varieties and flavors; therefore, their history is just as varied and colorful as they are. The History of Jelly Beans Initially, the first Jelly Bean was created in the early 1800s by an unknown American candy manufacturer. However, the beginnings of their manufacturing process can be traced back to 17th century France. The French made Jordan Almonds, sugar-glazed almonds, by a process called panning, which is now used to make the hard sugar coating on jellies. Panning is the swinging of the desired object in a container filled with syrup and sugar until it forms a hard candy shell. By the mid-1800s, gummies had become very popular in the United States. An 1861 advertisement even recommended sending gummies to soldiers fighting in the Civil War. The most popular jelly candy distributor soon became The Herman Goelitz Candy Company (founded 1869), today known as The Jelly Belly Candy Company. Originally, jellies were sold by weight and flavor and then taken home in paper bags; but starting in 1976, the Jelly Belly Company created premixed, assorted flavored pouches. The original eight mixed flavors were: Root Beer, Very Cherry, Cream Soda, Green Apple, Grape, Lemon, Licorice and Mandarin. Today, The Jelly Belly Company has one hundred and thirty-three flavors and is constantly adding to its extensive assortment. What are Jelly Beans?
