Ukraine is a country in Eastern Europe, which borders Russia to the north and north-east. Ukraine has been making international headlines lately; the country is in complete and utter turmoil or, for lack of better words, crisis. What began as a demand from Ukrainian citizens for a change of government, to limit the powers of the president, to return the country's constitution to its original form of 2004-2010 and to bring closer ties with the EU. The peaceful protests turned into a nightmare when the then President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych did not keep his word. Instead, he made a deal with the Russian president and later sought refuge in Russia. A few weeks later, he was ousted in what triggered the Ukrainian Revolution and the annexation of Crimea, also known as the Crimean Crisis. A revolution in Ukraine took place in February 2014 over a 5-day period in Kiev, the capital of Ukraine, after a series of violent events in the capital culminating in the ouster of the then president of Ukraine. Immediately after Yanukovych's ouster, immediate changes occurred in the sociopolitical system of Ukraine. Starting with the installation of a new interim government and the restoration of the constitution to its original state, up to the plan to hold an impromptu presidential election in the following months. Before the revolution, Ukraine had been sunk by years of corruption, mismanagement, lack of economic growth, the value of its currency had collapsed, and it was unable to obtain financing from public markets. For this reason, President Yanukovych wanted to establish closer relations with the European Union (EU) and Russia to attract the money needed to maintain Ukraine's standard of living without... middle of paper... some rules have been broken, but if there is a way to do it legally, then why not? Citizens should have a say in all of this, after all this is exactly what started this big mess. It was because people wanted to have a say and now this is their chance to make their voice heard and when they signed the deal with Russia that was their way of saying “Thanks but no thanks” to the EU. Even today there is still a struggle to reach some sort of civil agreement to end this feud. That is why the EU, the US and their allies have imposed sanctions. The European Commission is currently working on more far-reaching economic measures that will be imposed if Russia takes further steps to weaken Ukraine. If an agreement cannot be reached soon, the fate of Ukraine and its people will look very bleak.
